Protection
Insurance solutions
Protection is a different job from investing. This page explains what each category of cover actually does, and what to check before relying on it.
First principles
Protection comes before accumulation
Insurance exists to transfer a financial risk you could not otherwise absorb. Its value is not measured by what it returns; it is measured by what it prevents.
An uninsured event — a serious illness, or the loss of the household’s main earner — does not only create an immediate cost. It usually forces the liquidation of investments earmarked for entirely different goals, often at the worst possible moment.
That is why protection is generally addressed before, not after, a long-term investment plan is built.
Protection and investment are different jobs
Some insurance products include an investment component. That is not inherently wrong, but the two purposes are worth assessing separately: is the cover adequate, and is the savings element competitive on its own terms?
Before you buy any policy
- Read the policy wording, not only the brochure.
- Check exclusions, waiting periods and any sub-limits.
- Disclose health and lifestyle information completely and accurately.
- Confirm who the nominee is, and keep it updated.
- Understand what happens if a premium is missed.

Types of Cover
Educational descriptions only. Which cover is appropriate, and at what level, depends on your dependants, liabilities and circumstances.
Term Insurance

Term insurance is pure risk cover. It pays a sum assured if the insured person dies during the policy term, and typically has no maturity value if they do not.
Because there is no savings component, the premium for a given amount of cover is generally the lowest of any life insurance category. Its purpose is income replacement: the amount that would allow dependants to continue without the insured person's earnings.
What to check
- The amount of cover matters more than the premium. Under-insuring cheaply defeats the purpose.
- The policy term should extend at least as far as your financial dependants do.
- Disclosure at the time of application must be complete and accurate — non-disclosure is a common reason claims are contested.
- Riders can extend cover, but each has its own conditions and cost.
Health Insurance

Health insurance covers medical expenses arising from hospitalisation and, depending on the policy, certain treatments and procedures. In a country where most medical costs are met out of pocket, it is often the most immediately relevant form of protection.
Employer-provided cover is useful but conditional: it usually ends when the employment does, and its sum insured is set by the employer rather than by your needs.
What to check
- Waiting periods apply, particularly for pre-existing conditions and specified illnesses.
- Room rent limits, co-payments and sub-limits can materially reduce what is actually paid.
- Exclusions are as important as inclusions — read them.
- Medical inflation has historically outpaced general inflation, so a sum insured chosen years ago may no longer be adequate.
A health policy does not remove the need for an emergency fund. A medical event can create a claim and a cash-flow problem at the same time.
Life Insurance

Beyond pure term cover, life insurance includes categories that combine protection with a savings or investment element — endowment, money-back, whole life and unit-linked plans among them.
These serve different purposes and cost more for the same amount of cover, because part of the premium goes towards the savings component rather than the risk cover.
What to check
- Assess the protection and the savings elements separately, so neither is judged by the wrong yardstick.
- Understand the surrender value and what happens if you stop paying premiums.
- For unit-linked products, the investment risk is borne by the policyholder.
- Check the charges: mortality charge, policy administration, fund management and any allocation charge.
Other Protection Solutions
Depending on circumstances, other covers may be relevant — personal accident cover, critical illness cover, and cover for specific assets or liabilities.
These are not substitutes for term or health cover. They address particular risks, and are worth considering once the core protection is in place.
What to check
- Critical illness policies pay on diagnosis of listed conditions, defined precisely in the policy wording.
- Personal accident cover typically addresses disability as well as death.
- Overlapping covers can mean paying twice for the same risk.
Why this site does not compare specific policies
Insurance products differ in ways that a comparison table flattens: definitions of covered conditions, claim documentation, waiting periods, network hospitals and the insurer’s own claim record. Two policies with the same premium and sum insured can behave very differently at claim time.
Rather than publish comparisons that would inevitably mislead, we explain what to examine and go through it with you directly.

Work out what cover you actually need
The right level of cover follows from your dependants, your liabilities and the income that would need replacing. That is a short conversation, and a worthwhile one.
